I tried to fix a friend's laptop - all the drivers, EVERYTHING, magically disappeared. With no way to get the drivers back on (CD drive not recognized; you can forget about USB and Ethernet) it was pretty much game over. XP/Apathetic OS for the win. The way, in XP at least, to get the profile to fix itself is to delete the Favorites folder under the users documents folder. Im not sure if Vista still has this folder but the reason you do this is because when you login, Windows checks the profile for certain folders like Favorites and if it isnt there then it rebuilds it. Im not sure how much of your settings are wiped but maybe a documents backup is advised. I have barely used Vista and even for that short time I knew it was a flop. Ubuntu FTW! Have fun Nar.
