Wow - An Experiment Gone Well

Posted June 21st, 2008, at 04:02 PM

Yesterday I posted an ad to craigslist offering a computer tuneup. I put a few ads up in my townhouse complex by the mailboxes, and even wrote my phone number and “Computer Tune Up” on my car windows.

Honestly, I didn’t expect a response at all on the first day. I thought I might get a call once a week at tops, and that would at least help me afford gas.

Wow, I was wrong. Very wrong.

I received 3 calls yesterday and finished two of the jobs. A hispanic family needed me to get their internet working before they could talk to their dying grandfather in mexico over webcam. I also am cleaning up a computer for another family. Halfway through a spyware scan, it had found 830 infections.

I woke up to a call from another a gentleman who wanted the tune up. That’s another $40 in my pocket. The tune up is fairly simple, but most people don’t understand how to do it themselves.

I let you know how this works out! I’m excited about the possibilities, and am going to continue posting ads on Craigslist.

I think this was a great idea, and I love the idea of putting the info on your car window. Heck, I could write something similar in the dust on my hood!

Something rather satisfying about that kind of work; people really rely on their computers, and you get them up & running again. It’s really a service.
